Comic-Con NY, 2006

Last August I began this blog with a trip to San Diego Comic-Con, and it was a blast. Well, in less than 24 hours I will be attending New York's first annual Comic-Con and I'm both excited and curious to see how it compares to the original, and what content will be displayed, unveiled and released upon an unsuspecting public. The anticipation builds. See you in a few days with updates, images and other cool stuff. Good times.

Gilgamesh -- Whose Side Are You On?

One think I've learned over the years watching anime is that you don't have to dive in from DVD Vol. 1. Sometimes it's good to wait till there are 3-4 volumes out so you can spend a good portion of the day watching each episode in a row. I did this with Trigun and Cowboy Bebop (box set) and those are still two of my favorite series even though I did not jump on from Vol.1. I've found a new series that matches this trend, Gilgamesh from ADV Films.

I've passed by this series on the store shelves quite a few times, caught first by the title then by the cover art. As I began watching this series my wife asked me why it's in black and white. Well, it's not, but it's a thought I was also having. The use of color is very subtle in this series. The grey tones set the mood the the entire anime, it's not a happy go lucky story. It's set in a world ravaged by one single terrorist attack (You'll learn more at the official site). The music is also very subdued and fits the visual feel so well.

One of my favorite things about this series is the character design. I feel like I'm watching a series set in the world of Blood: The Last Vampire. I don't know how best to describe the look, it's just unique, and so perfect for Gilgamesh. I've seen screen shots of the upcoming Blood+ and I must say Gilgamesh is what that series should have looked like. I'm just a few disc in (# 3 to be exact) and I am hooked.

The opening theme, Crazy 4 U, is catchy and sort-of off center for such a moody anime. Well, that does it for now, check out Gilgamesh, watch a trailer at least, and enjoy one of the prettiest anime on the market.

Princess AI Impression

Ok, who can tell me more about Princess AI? I'm going to be reading these manga very, very soon and I kinda know the story, but I want to hear from fans of the series. I have to tell you the art is freaking gorgeous. I'm very curious to see what I find as I delve into the world of Princess AI.

WarCraft The Sunwell Trilogy Manga Impression

Run, do not walk, to your local manga Mecca and buy Vol. 1 and 2 of Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy. Now I love me some manga, and I've been privy to read some more American based titles (Devil May Cry) to see how they adapt. Warcraft is one of those titles (check out the online manga here, Warcraft). It's based on a computer game, one which I do not know too much about, heck I'm a console gamer, not PC. Anyway it's set in the world of Warcraft and is sure to have characters and locations that series veterans will notice, but it's more than just the standard-fare 'lets turn a game into a manga' type of series.

This trilogy is written by Richard A. Knaak (Dragonlance: Legend of Huma, DragonRealm series) and illustrated by Jae-Hwan Kim. It was Kim's cover art for volume one that drove me to pickup this series (check out the pics to the left) but it was Knaak's name that sold me. The art mixed with an excellent story is well worth your time to pickup, I just hate the fact it's only a trilogy. I can tell you this, Warcraft: TST will find a place on my bookshelf along with all my favorite manga, Dragonlance collection and (out of print) Drago books. Good times. If you like fantasy pick up this series, it's a nice mixture of East meets West.

Totally Geeked for .hack//G.U.

I hope it's not just me, I hope I'm not the only schlub who cannot wait to get his hands on the next .hack// game. Really, have you seen the trailer??? Check it out at, it's on the right side of the page. I know there is still not a solid release date or for that matter a lot of game info, but how can any .hack// fan not be super excited. I've played the games, read the manga, read the novel, watched the anime (all three) and I want more ... MORE! I never got into the TCG (you need friends for that) but I will, 100%, play online for real if that rumor is true. Man, you have to check out the trailer, it's so freaking sweet. Oh, the music is some of the best I've heard in a long, long time. If you like this music you need to check out the soundtracks for Noir and Madlax, A+ stuff, no joke.
